Sledmere Stud Easter Yearling Sale graduate Dirty Work (by Written Tycoon) posted his maiden black-type success when completing a hat-trick of wins in landing the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens — a program which constituted Day 2 of the 2020 Scone Cup Carnival.
A progressive son of Written Tycoon raced by Spendthrift Australia P/L out of the Rosehill stable of Team Hawkes, Dirty Work went into the contest following consecutive wins on the Kensington circuit at Randwick, the latest of which saw the 3-year-old colt win by over two lengths.
Sent to post a $3.60 favourite for Saturday’s feature, Dirty Work proceeded to dispense with a quality group of Sydney sprinters with an impressive display of acceleration.
Given a copybook ride by Tommy Berry just behind the pace, Dirty Work showed a brilliant turn of foot halfway down the straight before clearing out to a two-and-a-half lengths victory. Found in his wake were the likes of 2019 Kosciuszko winner Handle The Truth and 2019 Country Championships Final winner Noble Boy.
After 13 starts, Dirty Work has now saluted on four occasions and placed in another three starts, so far amassing $202,750 in earnings.
Dirty Work is the latest Sledmere Stud sales graduate to have featured in stakes company during a very rewarding 2019/20 racing season.
Group 2 Reisling Stakes winner Dame Giselle has set the benchmark as a very prominent member of the juvenile division, while Unition has also figured in the New Zealand 2-year-old ranks by winning the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes.
In addition, Kiwi open-age sprinter Spring Heat has proven to be a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placegetter this year; Sledmere-bred Pancho won a 3YO Listed event over the 2019 VRC Melbourne Cup Carnival; and star Sledmere sales graduate Invincibella posted her third straight Magic Millions Fillies & Mares (RL) victory.
This season’s stakes performers Secret Blaze, Causeway Girl, Snapdancer and Pioneer River are other Sledmere graduates — in one form or another — to have made their contribution to a memorable racing season.
