A brace of promising 3-year-olds consigned by Sledmere Stud during the 2022 yearling sales series gave light of bigger and better wins to come when first Wymark (NZ) and then Wolfy (NZ) scored within 20  minutes of each other in Sydney and Melbourne respectively last Saturday.

Pitted against older horses for the first time in his promising career, Wymark (NZ) scored an impressive win in a $160,000 Benchmark 78 handicap at Rosehill over 1900m, careering away from his rivals in the closing stages to score by more than two-and-a-half lengths.

Sent out the $3.40 favourite, Wymark recorded his third win in succession and prompted trainer Michael Freedman to declare:  “It’s exciting. We will have a look at the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) in two weeks’ time and then see what happens after that.”

In the very next race staged at Caulfield, Sledmere Stud sale graduate Wolfy (NZ) scored a gutsy win over 1200 metres for Flemington trainer Nick Ryan.

The son of Tivaci took his record to read three wins and two seconds from just eight starts, with Ryan now considering a trip to Sydney for better class races to be staged in and around The Championship.

As Ryan himself put it: “He is going to improve a lot and I’ll see how he pulls up, but there are a few options for him in Sydney. I’ve got a high opinion of him and he will get better with more racing. I think 1400 metres might be his go now.”

Both Wymark (NZ) and Wolfy (NZ) were bred by Waikato Stud and sold on their behalf by the Sledmere Stud sales team. The former is a 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, having been sold to Mick Wallace for $200,000. The latter was acquired by Ryan for $280,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale the following month.

With major stakes races beckoning for Wymark (NZ) and Wolfy (NZ), this promising pair join a 3-year-old crop which already includes Sledmere Stud graduates Ozzmosis (VRC Coolmore Stud-Gr.1), dual Group 1 Guineas runner-up Veight, and Listed Gothic Stakes winner Arkansaw Kid — all three having also been sold at either the Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and Inglis Classic Yearling Sale at the very same 2022 renewals.
