The Sledmere Stud sales team played its part at another major domestic bloodstock assembly in 2021 when offering two prized Lots at the Chairman’s Sale hosted by Inglis at Riverside Stables.

An ultra-select catalogue comprising of some of the most exciting broodmare prospects in the southern hemisphere, the auction saw Sledmere offer the home-bred multiple stakes placegetter Causeway Girl and the dual Group 1 winning sprinter Pippie.

Rightly billed as one of the star Lots of the evening, Pippie fetched the third-top price of the evening when knocked down to Tasman Bloodstock, acting on behalf of Cressfield stud, for $1,800,000.

Speaking on behalf of the purchasing concern, Wayne Bedggood remarked: “We know the market is strong, quality horses make big money and she’s a quality horse. We knew we were going to have to be strong to get her. She was one of our top mares of the sale and we missed out on a couple of others, so it was nice to take her home.’’

Earlier in the evening, Causeway Girl realised $375,000 when sold to Springmount Stud of Victoria. The striking, near black daughter of Shamus Award was bred, born, raised, sold and partly-owned by Sledmere during a notable racing career which saw three wins and eight placings that returned $324,800 in earnings.

Speaking after the sale of Pippie and Causeway Girl, Treen Murphy said: “We love the Chairman’s Sale. We’re absolutely delighted to be supporting it every year. It gets a great atmosphere. Inglis do an amazing job to get all the big buyers here for these incredible mares.”

Treen added: “These are some of the best offerings in Australia, if not the southern hemisphere and around the world. You don’t get a catalogue like this just anywhere.’’
