The Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1800m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday witnessed a memorable result for the extended Sledmere Stud family. New Endeavour (Ire), an Irish-bred son of New Bay bred in partnership by Oghill House, David Hyland and Sledmere Stud, recorded his first win Down Under with a commanding performance in demanding conditions.
New Endeavour (Ire) began his career with Newmarket trainer Roger Varian who developed the gelding into a multiple stakes placed 3-year-old switched to Australia for the $10 million Golden Eagle in November 2023 on the evidence of his proven black-type ability.
After a respectable performance when finishing midfield behind Obamburumai (Jpn) at Rosehill, beaten just over three lengths, New Endeavour (Ire) was left with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott to continue his racing career on the local front .
Following a string of consistent efforts including a commendable second in last year’s Group 1 Doomben Cup, New Endeavour (Ire) finally broke through for his maiden Australian win for connections who include Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud, two of Ireland’s leading breeding and racing operations.
Speaking after his winning ride on New Endeavour (Ire), Tim Clark remarked: “He went so close to winning a couple of races at this carnival last year, but it is good to see him finally get that win in Australia and it was well deserved.”
Similarly, co-trainer Adrian Bott stated: “This is his first win in Australia and [he] has been promising so much. Twelve months ago he was knocking on the door for a Group One. [This is] Very deserved.”
In addition to his Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup victory and Group 1 Doomben Cup placing, New Endeavour (Ire) has also run second in the Newbury Hungerford Stakes (Gr.2), Sydney Doncaster Prelude (Gr.3) and Brisbane Chairman’s Handicap (Gr.3), as well as third in the Sydney Shannon Stakes (Gr.2), Japan Racing Association Plate (Gr.3) and Newmarket Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (LR).
Following Saturday’s success, the co-Sledmere Stud bred import has now recorded three wins and 10 placings from 26 starts for $778,276 in earnings.
