Third when resuming this campaign behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Runaway, making up many lengths over an unsuitable 1550m, the Sledmere Stud yearling sale graduate Augustus has always shown that he is going to enjoy a trip, and after a second to Pandemonium over a mile, he was back at that distance at Hawkesbury to break his maiden.
By Arrowfield Stud’s Champion Sire Snitzel out of the well-related Gussy Godiva, Augustus is a half-brother to the Group 1 Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor, adding further evidence that he should appreciate 2000m plus and could develop into a Derby contender.
Starting the race favourite in the Livamol 3YO Maiden, the Chris Waller-trained runner had Grant Buckley in the saddle and after jumping away from barrier 7, settled in last position in the 9 horse field.
With outsiders The Big Boss and Wine Time Anytime taking up the running, the favourite runners were back in the field, many lengths from the leading duo.
When nearing the home turn, the field started to fan across the track and Augustus found a gap and he charged through, pulling away to break his maiden by a length and a quarter from the John O’Shea-trained Langley.
With races like the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes, Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and even the Group 1 VRC Debry during the Spring carnivals both in Sydney and Melbourne, there are plenty of options for the well-bred colt.
Special congratulations to the connections of the Sledmere Stud sold Magic Millions graduate; Newgate S F, Aquis Farm, China Horse Club Racing Pty Ltd, Horse Ventures and Winstar Farm Llc.
